Map of Hell, circa 1955

One of the final projects for Color and Design <3

A map of Hell for Grendel's (and the Rebel's) demonverse, based loosely on Dante's inferno. It goes from the city of Jerusalem, drops briefly into Chaos, then runs into the Acheron (here shown as a lake with a walkway), the main gates of Hell, guarded by an odd centaur, then into rainy Upper Hell, separated into levels and guarded by Cerberus and Raindogs.

Raindogs are replacing the wolf-creature Plutus from the original inferno. Apparently the name "Plutus" came from Dante mixing up the gods Pluto and Plutus. D:!

Then we have the main business center of the City of Dis, and the lower levels represented by the ice growth in the center (Cocytus). Then it goes into the Lake of Fire and over to what is either Pandemonium or Purgatory. I haven't figured out which. D:

Little Grendel here is with a Lion-beast, one of the three creatures who chased Dante in the dark forest before Hell. He's a family friend of the Grendels. :3 He has a human face and goat hooves.

The main concept of Hell's design is to take the map Dante set out from the perspective of a modern demon. For humans, Hell is a chaotic place of torture, but this is the demons' home--they've lived here for thousands of years,and as a result a natural evolution has occurred, moving more demons into the metropolitan Dis.

Hell is a very bureaucratic place. Even the most traditional demons recognize that a successful rebellion against God has to be, well, organized.

Incidentally, scanning is hard. D: Does anyone have any good tips?

I'm sure the attempt at a Mary Blair style is obvious. This basically took up 90% of all my final project time. I'm particularly happy with how Dis turned out--it was looking awful for so long and it's unusual that I can turn an unsuccessful part of a piece around.
