Guess what weeee got to design for character design class! (and then, since it's film season, no one showed up)

It's sort of cheating to use designs I was already pretty solid on, so I used this opportunity to think up a bunch of graphic looks . . . . AND ways to present it to a fairly conservative teacher who was looking for contrast in appearance over anything else.

Hence I may have to warn Jekyll and Hyde fans that this is a rather exaggerated version of Hyde. 8| Since the usual image of Hyde is really hulking and huge and powerful, I was working to "sell" Hyde as a small, skinny character that somehow has just as much impact. The contrast is not line-shaped-figure (Jekyll) to circle-shaped figure (Hyde)--it's smooth curves to scruffy scribbles and jagged lines.

I keep rethinking what kind of addiction Hyde's formula is akin to. I really don't like "updating" the story by having Jekyll inject himself with the formula. The charming inaccuracy of drinking it sells it as a cultural icon, a good ol' scientific romance, and also suggests alcohol as its closest relation. Hence: Hyde is not some supernatural evil brought about with Evil Technology but a result of everyday vice that anyone can relate to.

I generally agree with that! However I've been pushing more for a "meth addict" look for Hyde because that pretty obviously shows the draining effect of the HJ7. Hyde stresses a lot the positive aspects of being himself, and that he is happier in general than he ever was without the formula, but it's really eating away at him, physically. Lol anti-drug much? Also it's sort of fun to make characters look like they're constantly in pain.

Jekyll doesn't work so well in such a graphic style. :\ I like the idea but the final product looks sorta crappy. I like shadow!Jekyll though!

I think the style I was going for with the blue drawing was from this illustrator of this cute book called "Vampire Loves"

Personally, I love all the frames with the both of them together. The concept that they both exist at the same time inside one person is always cool, and looking at these pictures of them makes it fun to think about from that angle!

oh man. this is really cool. i really like the bottom ones with the shadows.

You fool, there can never be too much Jekyll & Hyde.

Jekyll looks like some kind of nancy rich boy in that last one.

Hee hee hee. You already know my love for all your work in this field. The bottom red and blue ones are my favorites, tho. Ha, and I like the top right Hyde too. He wouldn't give two craps that he was bleeding. He'd be all like, "I'm leaking iron". :XD: Wonderful.

I love that your character design class has you designing characters from classic literature. It's perfectly up your alley.

(Of course, it's none of the really esoteric classical lit, like Frollo from 'Hunchback,' but classic lit characters who have entered the public imagination. Still a cool theme of assignments!)

Also, these are awesome. My favorites are probably the shadow images at the bottom, but I love Hyde's twiggy hair throughout. And I love him burrowing himself in his scarf. :D

I like the idea of Hyde being skinny and small, it goes along well with your idea about meth addicts and such. Because in the usual case with drugs you are less of who you are when you're on them. It also makes Jekyll more of the dominant personality visually in comparison and Hyde look more dubious and mischievous.

Looove it! Especially the bottom right image. XD

... interesting. Somewhat eclectic. I like the analogy of the characters to shapes.
