This week will be interesting and I might die.
I'm supposed to be:
a) sewing my halloween costume. I'm kiki from kiki's delivery service <3
b) starting on my last story assignment, which I'm sure will be hell
c) finishing up character design and layout homework
d) salvaging this crapawful first animation scene I'm working on (this will take up the most time)

Michael was nice enough to offer some critique on that animation after class (not during class because it should be noted that our current animation class is NOT FOR LEARNING it is for failing). Unfortunately when it comes to animation I'm very bad at applying critique when I get it so I spent the morning cutting up my animation and who knows if this made it better or worse D:

And now I can't think about anything else. Boo to me!

Also gosh uh I'm running low on things to read since I basically read CONSTANTLY this weekend and this week's critical studies reading is boring and long.

EDIT: Everyone in my class has been complaining of a certain animation class--and for a while I was not terribly bothered by it because the sheer suck factor was at such an extreme that it became pretty funny....

But then I tried to animate today.

SOMEHOW that class actually taught me NEGATIVE LESSONS. Now I can't remember how to do anything! All I see are nonsensical charts and some vague and yet very incorrect notions about in-betweens.

I USED TO KNOW HOW TO DO THIS STUFF.

Can I boycott this class? D:

I moved in today into my new room in this house in Newhall. :3 It's very NICE and has a billion square somethings in storage space and uh. Oh wait how am I going to feed myself this week *is lazy and helpless and has been raiding the home kitchen all summer*

Yeah now would probably be a good time to actually figure out what classes I want to sign up for. D: Gosh I have no idea.

I have a weird feeling most of the ones I want are night classes which is a bother since the 7-10 block is when my energies are lowest. But like maybe sculpture class oooh or like ummmm acting for animators or uhhhhh preparing for the marketplace?? This year class sign-ups are making me so ADD

OHH important request!! I'm almost done with a preliminary pass of storyboards for an idea I might use for my second year film. I'm not going to be posting it publicly this year, but if anyone would like to help me out with their opinion PLEASE PLEASE tell me so I can send it to you. :3

In other news the crazy Jekyll and Hyde play script some people were talking about FINALLY CAME and I read it omg omg

.....actually D: I was kind of confused by it. I'm going to have to reread it again because I had a lot of "wait where is this going" moments.

Like!! I adore the idea of showing Jekyll's flaws and not having him be this special bean with only noble causes ever, but I found his oddities a bit random. He had this "guys I'm an atheist" moment and a "guys I totally like hallucinogens" moment (I'm really not sure how the audience is supposed to react to that one, because what probably sounded new and enlightened to Victorian ears sounds like "aging hippie" to me).

And I guess we're not supposed to like him by the end of the play but um! I kinda still preferred him over Hyde. "Hyde 3" especially--it seemed like his entire purpose was to be in love with that Elizabeth girl and I'm sorry but once you put "Hyde" and "love" into the same sentence I have a strong urge to insert "IS NOT IN" between them. Annoyingly he seemed to get the most stage time out of the four Hydes and I was like "yeah yeah yeah get back to murdering people for no reason PLEASE".

I kind of have a problem with Elizabeth. Er! Maybe I read her parts too fast, but I thought her romance with Hyde was WEIRD. She seemed to me like an ordinary person so I'm not entirely sure why she was sticking around a guy who is doing weird crap like going into random whorehouses and killing people who have the same name as you. I don't know. That'd be a bit of a warning sign to me.

I could understand if it she were some crazy girl and was all, "omg I've always wanted to date a cold-blooded killer cuz I'm CRAZY" but she's not.

I think this play made me realize how much I ship Jekyll/Lucy, it's awful. DX

Yeah, I sat through eight episodes of Haruhi Suzumiya's Endless Summer arc.

Anyway....

I was in San Fran on Wednesday and got to hang out with Reyna, Addie, Josh.... and we happened to run into Kei in Japantown. :3 It was pretty much exceedingly fun! I haven't been to that Nihonmachi in almost ten years, so already it has a somewhat nostalgic look to me.

Talking came along to the subject of Calarts (well, it would, wouldn't it?) and so of course I've been thinking about returning to school and How I Spent My Summer Vacation--most notably What I Drew On My Summer Vacation.

I haven't really gotten the impression that the school is trying to mold me into some sort of industry standard--but then again, I did come from a Catholic girls' school, where the assumption is that, if you're not being molded into something prim and polite, you aren't getting your money's worth.

The only thing is that I HAVE noticed over the summer that I'm constantly asking myself, "Is this worth drawing? Will this look good in my portfolio? Is this what the studios want to see?" It's really annoying, although I'm hoping it's largely due to what I've perceived as the Second-Year "I hate everything I draw" Syndrome. I guess the question is whether the atmosphere at Calarts has anything to do with it. If it does, then I really didn't feel it while actually at school--I generally thought the message of "we want to encourage personal style" was pretty well-enforced (failing that, people sure SAID it enough). I think the feeling began mostly after portfolio day, when you end up being sorted into "design", "story", or "animation" and you end up making new works with one of those three categories in mind.

My big problem is in design, as I have a much bigger ego about my character designs (er, not in general, but I'm pretty protective of the ones for my four major storylines) than I do about the way I make storyboards or the way I animate (especially how I animate, which is basically "do whatever"). I have a couple industry character design idols (I'm still busy staring at Shane and Shannon's Coraline arts) and in general I tend to prefer character designs made for animation. . . . but it gets to the point where, if I design something that would not be intended for animation, I doubt whether it's any good at all. I feel like I'm wasting my time.

I'm pretty sure that these funny insecurities aren't so much the school's fault as the industry. Um. And more than that, it's the trouble that I don't seem to have quite the ability to overcome whatever "pressures" are out there. Art and animation and story are pretty much my life, but I haven't gotten down to what I really enjoy about it. I just..... do.
